    Fireworks(花火)

      Fireworks
There was a dark blue night without moonlight, I was leaning against the window, looking out into the darkness, and feeling my heart quiet just like this night.
Yes, the night has fallen, and my fate, would be falling, too.
Who had invited whom to such a tale in which radiant traces of opal green gleamed, faded, and gleamed again? Just in a flash. I haven’t seen fireflies for a long time since I went to the palace, though in that ice-cold palace there were fireworks instead. But they were so splendid that I did not dare to look at.
Ken ordered all the fireworks-makers from the whole country to make fireworks for me. He was just expecting to please me, I know, so I didn’t tell him that what I liked is fireflies, not fireworks. Sometimes wrong might also do a beauty.
Although, it would not last long.
“What are you looking at?” said Ken. With these words he came towards to me and put his arms round my shoulder. Ken was the second prince of this country, and this little cabin did not fit to him at all.
“Nothing.” said I, smoothly. I felt his gentle breath around my bare neck.
I sighed gently, and then put my fingers on his.
“Do you like fireflies?” I asked, dropping my head down.
“Er, just so-so. But if you like them, I’ll…”
I hurried to cover his mouth with my hands. He stopped. Then I shook my head slightly, and got my hands back.
“You have fired the fireworks for me, and said you were sure that I would like them, for they are so beautiful that nothing can compare with them.”
“Yeah.” Ken nodded with a little puzzled. Certainly, he did not know why I mentioned the things 3 years ago to him.
“But, do you know? To my fate, the more beautiful the thing is, the more hardly I can touch it…”
Then I suddenly turned back to see his surprising eyes, and in their dark blue was my own pale face. At that time, I have thrust my sword into his body.
The blood welled out, covering the whole sky of mine. I thrust so deep that I felt his body turning cold gradually. I saw he struggle to open his eyes, but fail. His lip juddered, falling bloodless.
I pushed my sword out, and saw Ken lying down like a lion that lost all his strength. He opened his eyes with all his pains, which were full of the unbelievable. They gleamed, and then faded. Just in a flash.
      Like fireflies.
I covered my hand on Ken’s eyes. Yes, they were beautiful; they were fair dark blue with deep sadness, like two pieces of valuable jewels.
“Ken, ” I read his name gently, “you will never know in my life, the most beautiful thing is you. As in the palace, you like those expensive fireworks, which are so splendid that no one can touch. Although away from the palace, yet you are still that beautiful beyond my touch. I can’t own you. And you’re not mine, in the past, now, or in the future, either…”
I wiped the blood from my sword; them inserted it into the scabbard. I felt something in me had broken.
Maybe I had lost something, something more important than fireflies. Was that a firework? I could not believe. How could I love a firework? From that I could get nothing but pain. I did not expect that, I dared to see that happen, so, so I destroyed it by myself! The only one firework in the world which maybe belonged to me, but I have put it out. It would never bloom for me.
At that time, two lords came in. One asked, “Have things all been done?”
I turned back with a pale smile, “Yes, everything is ready.”
“Ah, our great king.” They went down with their knees before me, kissing my toes.
That was not strange, for I was the first prince of this country. As a baby, I was taken away from the palace to keep off the danger. I spent my whole youth in the forest with fireflies and had never seen fireworks until that day came.
On that day, I saw a long ornate line formed by servants, in front of which was a very handsome young man on his horse. I had never seen such a beautiful man that I stood there without any words. Then he got off his horse, and walked towards to me.
He stared at me with his beautiful eyes; they were fair dark blue, like two pieces of valuable jewels.
“I am coming to welcome you to return. My dear brother.” With these words, he put his hand on mine.
I felt my heart was juddering gently. And from then on, a new comer appeared in my life as it happened. That was Ken, this handsome young man, the second prince of this country, who was brought up in the palace.
Ken taught me a lot. But he was too gorgeous as the second heritor. He almost covered all my twinkle. I hated the fireworks that took all room of the sky, though they were that beautiful.
Obviously Ken loved me, for he was still a child who seemed to know everything but nothing in fact. I was not outstanding, just like a lonely firefly that was shining to my best, yet noticed by very few people. I really did not know why he loved me, as he didn’t know the sadness of fireflies at all.
      I had nothing to regret.
Then, I left the cabin that was filled with the odor of blood. The two lords followed me with happiness.
All the things were in their normal states.
No one will know my heart has been dead.
No one will know how deep I love Ken.
Ken, how I have wanted much, much close to him. His heart and eyes, his mouth and ears, don’t belong to me, either, of which I can catch none.
I passed the forest without looking at the sky. But I knew there must be a lot of fireflies, shining, so beautiful as if they were fireworks.
From now on, I will try to love fireworks.
